Position Overview

Wildlife Rehabilitation Volunteers assist AWARE’s licensed wildlife rehabilitators in caring for injured and orphaned native wildlife. Volunteers support the daily operation of our wildlife hospital and help provide essential care for animals throughout the rehabilitation process.

This role offers hands-on experience with many different species and is a great opportunity for volunteers who want to help wildlife directly while learning about wildlife care, nutrition, and rehabilitation.

 

Responsibilities

Volunteers may assist with:

  • Supporting the daily husbandry and care of wildlife patients
  • Preparing species-appropriate diets and feeding wildlife patients
  • Assisting with the care and hand-rearing of orphaned baby animals such as squirrels, opossums, deer, and other native species
  • Learning and assisting with safe wildlife handling and restraint techniques
  • Syringe feeding or specialized feeding techniques under staff supervision
  • Cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures and treatment areas
  • Observing animal health and behavior and reporting concerns to staff
  • Assisting with the daily tasks that keep a busy wildlife hospital running

 

Training & Learning Opportunities

Volunteers will gain experience in:

  • Wildlife husbandry and nutrition
  • Species identification and natural history
  • Basic wildlife rehabilitation techniques
  • Observing animal health and recovery
  • Working in a fast-paced wildlife care environment


Ideal Volunteers

This role is a good fit for individuals who are passionate about helping wildlife and eager to learn more about wildlife rehabilitation. Volunteers should be comfortable with hands-on animal care and willing to support the daily needs of wildlife patients.

The work takes place in a fast-paced and sometimes physically demanding environment, so volunteers should be prepared to stay active and flexible throughout their shifts. This position also involves helping with all tasks necessary to support daily operations, including general cleaning and facility upkeep, which are essential to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for the animals in our care.
