Internships at AWARE

AWARE offers animal care internships on a rolling basis throughout the year. Most interns are students and/or people looking for experience to support a career in veterinary, biology, or other similar fields, but internships are open to anyone 16 or older, with or without experience. Internships are unpaid and we do not offer housing.

Internships are 240 hours and interns must schedule at least three and at most ten four-hour shifts per week. (Accordingly, internships are typically completed in between 6 and 20 weeks.) Available shifts are 10:30a-2:30p, 2p-6p, and 6p-10p, seven days/week. All hours are performed under the direct supervision of licensed rehabbers and under the oversight of our Director of Veterinary Medicine, and intern hours are typically considered "vet experience" by vet school admissions departments.

Intern responsibilities typically include, but are not limited to, diet preparation and feeding, syringe and gavage feeding, husbandry, handling and restraint, PO, IM, and SQ medications, cleaning and other housekeeping duties, assisting with examinations and medical procedures such as applying splints, wound care, and surgeries. Handling of rabies vector species only permitted under direct supervision by a Wildlife Care Supervisor for interns with pre-exposure rabies vaccinations and proof of titer.
