Position Overview
Wildlife Medical Care Volunteers assist the AWARE medical team in supporting the treatment and recovery of injured and orphaned wildlife patients. This position focuses on the medical and clinical side of wildlife rehabilitation and is designed for experienced volunteers who want to deepen their skills in wildlife care and patient treatment. Volunteers in this role work alongside the wildlife care team to assist with patient monitoring, treatments, and advanced husbandry for animals requiring specialized care.
Responsibilities
Volunteers may assist with:
- Participating in patient exams and treatment support
- Assisting with medical procedures and treatments
- Administering medications orally and through injections (SQ and IM)
- Monitoring patient health, recovery, and behavior
- Communicating observations to the medical team
- Providing advanced husbandry and daily care for wildlife patients
- Assisting with the care of more medically complex or high-needs animals
- Supporting the hand-rearing of more specialized species
Training & Learning Opportunities
Volunteers will gain experience in:
- The medical side of wildlife rehabilitation
- Wildlife treatment protocols and pharmacology basics
- Advanced wildlife husbandry and patient management
- Patient monitoring and clinical observation
- Working closely with wildlife professionals in a rehabilitation hospital setting
Ideal Volunteers
This role is a great fit for experienced wildlife rehabilitation volunteers who are interested in learning more about the medical side of wildlife care. Volunteers in this position work closely with staff and gain hands-on medical experience.
Volunteers should be comfortable working closely with staff in a fast-paced environment and eager to take on greater responsibility in patient care, including assisting with treatments, monitoring recovery, and supporting medically complex patients.
